This time, Cash knew exactly what he and the rest of the team were headed into. Maybe it hadnât been the smartest move he and Emmy had ever made, but their first sneak and peek of the dealerâs house had offered up some good intel.
All the team members besides Emmy and himâas tac medicsâwere loaded for bear. But everyone was loaded for canine, with a pocketful of trank-laced hot dogs.
Good damn thing, too. Because as soon as the team emerged from the trees and into the field, hulking, snarling shapes skulked out of the dead grass and underbrush. Like they were playing a freaking nitrate-filled softball game, he, Emmy, and the others began tossing hot dogs at them.
As aggressive as they were, they were still dogs and had no willpower when it came to that kind of temptation. The team froze while the dogs wolfed down the meat. Unfortunately, it would probably take a package each to put these dogs to sleep.
The one to Cashâs right began to waver first, weaving as he stalked toward them. One step. Two. And whoomp.
The feel of a hundred pounds of flesh hitting the ground vibrated under Cashâs boots. Like brindle-colored dominoes, the others did the same.
âHot dogs really are good for something,â Emmy whispered. âWish weâd had a package earlier.â
âYou can be sure Iâll be packing meat from now on,â he said back.
She snorted a low laugh.
The team slowly, careful step after careful step, approached the dealerâs house. No lights on inside or on the porch this time.
Jenkins, the point SWAT operator tonight, used hand signals to remind everyone of the breaching positions theyâd worked out in advance. The triangle-shaped cluster of bodies moved as a single unit toward what they thought would be a blind spot on the side of the house.
They were half a dozen steps from their destination when something rushed up from behind them with a barrage of fury-edged barks.
Fuck.
Cash spun, as did everyone at the back of the formation. Unfortunately, the dog homed in on McGarvey and leaped, teeth bared.
The manâs helmet visor protected his face, but the dog was a fucking mastermind and caught him in the vulnerable spot between the neck and shoulder where his body armor ended.
Behind them, lights flashed on from the house. Frontal and rear assault. âGet down!â he yelled at Emmy.
But she was already on all fours, crawling toward McGarvey where the dog had him pinned down. Oh, fuck no.
A boulder of fear crashed through Cashâs nervous system, but at the same time, his brain settled with the knowledge that Emmy knew her shit. She was tough and had all the skills to handle this situation. Sure enough, she crawled close enough to get in a side kick to the dogâs head, which knocked him off McGarvey. One more kick and the dog appeared to be unconscious.
Although shots erupted from three sides, and the entire team was now pinned to the ground, Cash risked crawling toward Emmy and McGarvey. Together, they pulled him away from the dog and behind a pine tree that didnât offer much cover.
